TSU Basketball Club to Compete in European Tournament

The team of Tbilisi State University, which became the champion and cup winner of Georgia this season, will fight for the participation in the FIBA Champions League. TSU will participate in the qualifying phase of the FIBA European Tournament of the highest level, and in case of success, it will enter the group stage of the Champions League. In connection with this, a meeting was held at Tbilisi State University, which was attended by TSU Rector Jaba Samushia, Vice President of the Georgian Basketball Federation, Nikoloz Tskitishvili and members of the basketball team.

“Today at Tbilisi State University, together with the Basketball Federation, we made a decision that the TSU basketball team will defend the honor of the university and the country at the European tournament. This will be a very big step forward, because the Georgian basketball team has not participated in the Champions League for the last five years,” said Rector Jaba Samushia.

In the 2017-2018 season, Tbilisi Dinamo played in the European tournament from Georgia, which started the season from the qualifying stage of the Champions League, but did not make it to the group stage.

On July 5, the draw for the qualifying round of the Champions League will be held at the FIBA headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to determine TSU’s opponents. 32 teams will participate in the 2023-2024 Champions League season, with 29 places already filled. 24 teams will compete in the qualification phase for the remaining 3 places. The championship will take place from September 25 to October 1. At the draw on July 5, together with TSU’s rivals, the format of the draw will be determined, according to which the qualifying stage will be held.

Teams that do not advance from the qualifying round to the group stage of the Champions League will drop down one level to the FIBA Europe Cup, where the regular season will begin in October and the best 2-2 teams from the four-team groups will play.

The selection of players has started at TSU and the main core of the team will be formed in a short time. In addition to Georgian basketball players, the TSU team will be strengthened by legionnaires, who will help TSU throughout the season, both at the European Championship and at the Georgian National Championship.
